October 2003 - The Bar Code Reader Cradle upgrades the IDVisor Deluxe packages with a two dimensional (2D) bar codes reader. 

The reader cradle utilizes the latest PDF417 bar code reader technology, it sets a new benchmark for readability and ease of use. No need to "aim" or "focus", simply insert and remove the card as you would with an ATM transaction. There are no moving parts or motors to break or fail. The only movement required is from the operator's hand to insert and remove the 2D encoded card.

Inside the Bar Code reader cradle is an oversized Li-Ion battery designed to last at least as long as the battery in the Handspring Visor Handheld computer.  An internal charger circuit re-charges the Li-Ion battery whenever it is connected to an external power source such as an AC power adapter or optional car cigarette lighter adapter.  Once the battery is fully charged, the charger circuit automatically turns off and continues to provide power to the bar code reader, thus ensuring the battery is fully charged when external power is removed.  There are NO no external battery packs or communication cables.  All necessary wires are hidden inside the T-shaped case which can be hand carried or positioned on a counter top. 

The Bar Code reader cradle has a recharging pin for Visor Handspring Pro which is a version of the Handspring handheld computer with twice the memory capacity (16 Mbytes) and an internal Li-Ion Battery.  With this version of the Handspring Visor computer, both Li-Ion batteries are recharged whenever external power is provided.  If purchasing a complete solution (CardVisor package plus bar code reader cradle), the Pro version of the Handspring Visor handheld can be ordered from TokenWorks for an additional charge.

Scanning a license is as easy as 1,2,3.  Just determine the type of machine readable technology (bar code or magnetic stripe), press the appropriate key, and swipe/dunk the license through/into the reader.  The screen will display updated information within one to two seconds.  Click on image to enlarge.
 

There are two Micro Security Slots on the Bar Code Reader Cradle.  These slots are the same found on most laptops today and work with a standard  laptop security cable.  Inside each slot is a steel plate which provides extra strength for the security cable locking mechanism.   Security cables can be purchased at most office supply/electronics stores.  Click on the image to enlarge.
